CBC’s online gambit
Following-up on Wednesday’s item on the CBC archives, there’s speculation that the music may be partly to blame. Although the CBC has an agreement with SOCAN for its radio broadcast, it allegedly has none for its Web content. Nor does the broadcaster have online rights to some of the content produced by freelancers. All this may help explain the clips canishing from the Web site.
Those legal headaches won’t be a problem for ZeD tonight, though. In fact, the episode will be relying almost exclusively on the Web to work. Dubbed Zed Uncut, the show will be webcast live, and, well, uncut, for around five hours. Each time zone will broadcast a portion of that webcast on television.
But that’s just the sideshow, the real event occurs as viewers join in on the webcast through their own webcams and use the Web site to power the television program. Those without webcams can vote on which camera shot to use for the next few seconds. The whole thing will be hosted by Mio and Nobu Adilman — the best hosts from ZeD’s beta run a year or so ago.
In the Eastern Time Zone, the fun begins online at 10:25 p.m. and on television an hour later. Both seem as though they will be broadcasting until 5:45 a.m.
