Get Opera 6 beta and Mozilla 0.9.6
Normally, I wholeheartedly recommend downloading the latest versions of browsers, but in two recent cases I can’t.
- Opera 6.0 (beta) was recently released, and though a good browser, this upgrade is merely cosmetic: a new look for the browser and a new version number to match Netscape and IE. The ‘fastest browser on Earth” still has pathetic support for DOM, and there are still CSS bugs.
- Mozilla 0.9.6 has a number of potentially interesting updates, including support for favicon, and slightly improved handling of its tabs, but they did something horrendous to the JavaScript engine. I can’t even view this site now without it crashing, and other dHTML-heavy sites have actually produced C++ errors that have brought down the browser. Ugly ugly. Maybe they’ll fix it in one of the nightlies, but this is the worst milestone release in a long while.
