Slashdot subscriptions

This is it. Slashdot.org has decided to do the subscription-thing, and as expected from the site, its a unique system. Instead of a flat monthly or annual fee, subscribers pay US$5 to read 1,000 pages.

While not quite micropayments, the model comes close and was devised in the words of CmdrTaco:

…but Slashdot has a third of a million readers per day with different reading habits, and this is the best way to accommodate everyone fairly.

Last year, I argued community sites have the best chance of generating real revenue from subscriptions. Slashdot will be the ultimate test case.
