Re: Journalism Job Placements
These are just a few quick suggestions, for getting a print-based job after journalism.
- For work placements, I’d recommend contacting your local paper—in person—to see if there are any openings for interns. Also try other regional papers.
- If you have access to a job board at your school, check it frequently. Often positions are offered through j-schools that you wouldn’t normally find out about. (There are even some Web sites listing nothing but jobs for Canadian journalists.)
- Begin pitching stories to the papers and magazines. Not only will it keep you writing, and earn you some extra money, but it will also help promote your name—which can help when your résumé lands on the editor’s desk.
- Put your résumé and some of your recent work online. (All you really need to put them online is usually bundled with your Web browser.) If you access to a bit of your own Web hosting space use that, or you can always use a free service, like GeoCities.
Good luck.
