Anyone who has ever wondered why ' is not , and how using -- could infuriate people, should read the “The Trouble With EM’n EN.”

FYI: Though has been using the em dash for years (albeit with a space on either side), it has just recently switched to the “curly quotes.”

This week’s entire issue of A List Apart is devoted to typography on the Web and serves as an excellent primer on the subject. The second article, “Typography Matters” explains how Web-based typography is actually a usability isse. Interesting premise.

In other news, both CTVNEWS.com and globeandmail.com (sister sites) were nominated as finalists for the Online Journalism Awards from the Online News Association and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

CTVNEWS.com is up for “Creative Use of the Medium” for a site affiliated with a offline news service. The piece that quote the panelists eyes was CTVNEWS.com's coverage of the conflict in the Middle East.

Nominated in “Breaking News: Affiliated” category for its excellent coverage of the 2000 federal election, globeandmail.com is up against sites like the BBC News On-line and USATODAY.com.

Both nomiations are well deserved, and the sites (and corporate parent Bell Globemedia) should be applauded for producing some excellent online journalism.

Now if only the others could do the same…
