Online media matters

Where would I start?

Despite the changing job climate, you will likely begin at a small Canadian paper or a small magazine—not necessarily a bad thing. Smaller organizations offer more chances for you to do things you would never be able to at a larger place.

In magazine you’ll likely start out as an intern or assistant editor; in newspapers, an intern, a general assignment reporter, or, in a big paper, the person who monitors the crime desk at night; TV and radio you’ll probably begin as a production assistant, or writing news copy; and online, probably as off-hours editor posting stories.

Or you can set off on your own, freelancing, doing contract work, or starting your own online venture (a blog or even a webzine). It’s a lot of work, but can be very rewarding as you can work at home, and can pursue your own interests.
