Living Can Kill You

“Hip” Toronto and bad writing

Funny how these themes emerge. Today, writing.

Textism pointed me to this National Post article ostensibly about two hip Toronto writers and the hip Toronto scene, but serves as an example of how not write this kind of piece.

All writers should think about the points Gerry McGovern raises in “Why we type” before starting, then head over to No Train, Gain’s list of Writing Resources and read, in the very least, “Indirection in Newspaper Stories”.

In that typography is nothing without words, this addition by a Nielsen-ite to the ongoing debate about the best online fonts seems appropriate. (Both of the previous via WebWord)

Finally, J.D. Lasica has posted a partial transcript to a conference about Weblogs and online journalism I would have enjoyed attending: “Journalism’s New Life Forms,” held at the second annual conference of the Online News Association.
